María Retamal - La Historia de Raúl

María Retamal - The Story of Raúl

María Retamal Artisanal Potato Chips: a tradition from Guisando

María Retamal Potato Chips are an example of tradition, artisanal product, and authentic flavor in the Tiétar Valley. Made in Guisando, very close to Arenas de San Pedro (Ávila), these potato chips maintain a production method that has been passed down for generations.

Behind the project is Raúl, the current owner and soul of the business, who decided to continue a family history that began decades ago.

Today, María Retamal potato chips are distributed in stores and shops in the area, but they still retain the essence of a product made with care, patience, and respect for the raw materials.

The history of María Retamal Potato Chips

The story begins thanks to a sister of Raúl's grandmother, an entrepreneurial woman who opened a churrería (churro shop) in Madrid. Over time, in addition to churros, they also started making potato chips.

The product was so successful that they decided to take the idea to the family village: Guisando, in the heart of the Sierra de Gredos.

Raúl's grandmother opened a small churrería there that soon became a well-known spot in the area. The potato chips were made entirely by hand: they were packaged in small bags that were sealed by hand with a candle.

Over time, the business grew. Raúl's grandfather traveled to nearby villages distributing the potato chips in his car, creating a network of loyal customers in Guisando, Arenas de San Pedro, and other towns in the Tiétar Valley.

Years later, when the business needed continuity, Raúl decided to take the reins. Although he was working in France at the time, he saw the value of keeping this family tradition alive.

Since then, he has expanded the business, modernized the factory, and developed new formats, but always with a clear idea: to maintain the original flavor of the traditional potato chips.

Currently, the brand has more than 200 direct customers and several distributors, although it still maintains an artisanal production spirit.

Artisanal potato chips made like in the old churrerías

María Retamal potato chips are made following the traditional style of churrería potato chips.

They only use three ingredients:

  • selected sour potato

  • 100% sunflower oil

  • salt

The process is simple, but very careful: the potatoes are peeled, fried at a low temperature, and then packaged.

Frying at a low temperature allows for better preservation of the potato's natural flavor and achieves a very characteristic crispy texture, different from that of many industrial potato chips.

Furthermore, many phases of the process are still carried out by hand, which ensures that each batch maintains the artisanal character that distinguishes this product.

A natural, gluten-free, and allergen-free product

María Retamal Potato Chips stand out for their simplicity and quality.

They are made only with natural ingredients:

  • potato

  • sunflower oil

  • salt

That's why they are:

  • gluten-free

  • allergen-free

  • additive-free

  • no added fats

A simple product, but with an authentic flavor reminiscent of traditional potato chips.
